You Guys Rock

I haven't checked my Google Analytics lately but when I did today I came across a surprising but awesome revelation! Chuckp3.com readers have finally embraced Firefox! For the first time Firefox was the most often used browser (with 53.4%) and Internet Explorer 6, aka the worst browser in the world, was used by just over 10% of readers!

Just another example of the Kingdom of God breaking into this broken world of ours. ;)

For those of you who haven't switched yet, do so now and join the revolution.

Firefox 2

And if you just love Microsoft that much, at least do the decent thing and upgrade to IE 7.

DVDpedia

If you're like me and have a large DVD library from which friends are always borrowing movies and you use a Macintosh, then you might want to check out DVDpedia. I found this little gem a few weeks ago and I absolutely love it. The initial setup was great, it was able to use my iSight camera to scan the bar code on my movies and add them to my library. It will keep track of the movies friends have borrowed and even lets you send them an email reminder to return them. For more info check out their site http://www.bruji.com/dvdpedia or browse my own collection by clicking on the blue DVDs button in the sidebar (DVDpedia will export your library to HTML).

The Genographic Project

Genographic987yasdfa.jpg
Back in May Kara got me a test kit for National Geographic’s “Genographic Project” for my birthday. I got my test results back today. The above is the journey of the different Y-Chromosone markers in my DNA. After watching the video I learned that “my people” the Cro-Magnons conquered the Neandertals and took over europe just before the last ice age when they survived in Northern Italy. I’m a part of M343 (Halogroup R1B). Super interesting!

OS X Leopard

OSXLeopard1q9843tq.jpg
Good news from yesterday: We finally get a sneak peak at OS X Leopard! Apple’s new OS, which will ship in Spring ‘07. Check it out here. Windows users, take a look at what windows will be able to do in... oh five years or so. As usual there is good reason to watch Steve Jobs’ keynote, not the least of which is the introduction of the Mac Pro which replaces the PowerMac G5.

I Know Where You Live

Map3275752.jpg
Really, I do. Well at least what town you’re from. Google Analytics is one of my favorite time-wasters, and I thought I’d post a picture of who’s looked at my site this week. Someone in China checked out chuckp3.com this week, along with a Canadian and someone from Plano, TX! Who are you people who actually visit this site? Until Google Analytics came along I thought I had a few friends and family visiting, but apparently my audience is a bit wider. If you’re a regular reader and I don’t know you, leave a comment and tell me how you found my site and why you keep coming.

A Truly Universal Remote

Logitech.jpg Have you ever bought a “Universal Remote” only to find out that it wasn’t? I know I have. So instead of three or four remotes you really just cut it down to two or three. Well look no further than Logitech’s line of “Harmony” remotes. I picked up the XBOX 360 version (which has the XYAB buttons added in). You plug this puppy into your computer (Mac or PC) via USB and then add all your devices on their handy online setup. Then you create “activities” with all your devices.

For example I have an activity called “Play XBOX 360” when I select that the remote turns on the TV, My XBOX 360, and the Sony Receiver (all while turning the TV and Receiver to the right inputs). Then if I select “Watch TV” it will turn off the XBOX 360 and the Sony Receiver and switch the TV to the right input. My friend at Best Buy said “if they made it, make it, or will make it this remote will control it.” So far he’s been right, and I love it! It will even control lights/fan if you’ve got that on a remote.

Widescreen iPod?

VideoiPod.jpgI was over at macrumors.com today and saw this. If it’s real and this is the next big things for apple (along with movie downloading from iTunes)... sweet.

MacJournal

Well after several tweaks, I got MacJournal working on my blog the way I wanted to. Not necessarily the easiest of programs to set up, but thanks to Eric I got it to work. The only difference is that from now on the entire post will be shown, no more “keep reading...”

Library Thing

Thanks to Fletch over at Microbrewed Meditations, I came across Library Thing, an online book cataloging/rating/recommending/widgeting tool. It's great! I especially like the blog widget, which some of you may notice is already at work in the left sidebar. Eric simultaneously found Library Thing yesterday... it was fate.

Uncanny Valley

Patrick Hruby over at ESPN's Page 2 has a fascinating article about artificial intelligence and advancements in computer-generated graphics. Taking a cue from the newly released Madden '06 for the XBOX 360 Patrick addresses the all too lifelike graphics of the newer players... the problem is that they're getting too real. If you've played these games you know what he's talking about. The graphics of the players has steadily increased to the point of an almost lifelike appearance. Something is missing though, perhaps it's the eyes, the way Donovan McNabb's lips move when he calls an audible... something is missing. Patrick points out a theory by Japanese roboticist, Masahiro Mori, something called the Uncanny Valley.

This is the theory that we emphathize with and emotionally respond positively to things that we can find human qualities in, the more qualities the better our emotional response... to a point. When they start to resemble humans too much, we start to focus on what makes them non-human. So while the old Madden '94 game is cute and nostalgic, the new one seems cold on some level, or just not quite alive.

Perhaps this is in some part because of the imago dei. Maybe those of us whom were created by God have an innate sense for when another "human" has not been created by the Creator, but by a creature.

That being said... what they're doing these days is pretty impressive "cold" or not. Check out the new Madden videos and see for yourself. The players now watch the ball into their hands, they breathe harder when they're sprinting downfield, grimace when tackled... almost just like real life.

Update Your Site Feed!

Update your feed to my site! It will now be detectable from the main page chuckp3.com. As I've learned a bit of php I've totally redesigned the structure of my site to make it much more simple, easy to update and give seamless integration with my blog. The only problem is that my site feed is still stuck back in an old folder, so it works but you can't access it or "detect" it from the main blog page... well no more! So update your feeds!

Update: Still working out some of the kinks... the site feed may not be up for a few mintues. I'll update again when it's working.

Update 2: Okay the site feed works now! If you're using a newsreader you should be able to detect the atom feed from chuckp3.com. If you're using Safari, just click on the site feed link in the right column and subscribe. If you're using Internet Explorer... I'm sorry for you.
