No she didn't flash a gun or anything, but she certainly conveyed the idea that she did. Perhaps she did, perhaps she didn't. Either way, she definitely portrayed the mentality that gun-toting is an excellent way of defending/portraying yourself. Where I live, this is something I encounter in probably 8 out of 10 people, including women. I'm just saying that I didn't personally like that aspect of her character, and wonder if the ethical challenge presented in the form of her character did more harm or good.....

The fact that she totes a gun, I think, qualifies her as gun-toting! I just saw her character simultaneously challenging and yet reinforcing a lot of weird, not so good characteristics....I don't know. All in all though, I don't think that she really acted. I think she did like Ellen Page in Juno....she just acted like herself. I don't know, we'll see. I would agree with a nomination, but I think that a win would be just silly!

I think she captured the character of LeeAnne Tuohy incredibly well. I haven't kept up much on the buzz for who else would be nominated, but she would make my list so far. What makes LeeAnne "gun-toting" and "Sara Palin-esque" by the way?

Good movie, I agree, and probably an even better book, right?
But Oscar worthy? I've heard a lot of talk about Bullock getting a best actress award for this. My response....come on. Are you serious? Maybe, and I mean maybe she deserves to get nominated, but win an oscar for acting like a over-caffeneinated, gun-toting, Sarah Palin-esque, rich white woman from the South with a sense of compassion? The story is great, but her acting wasn't. What do you think Charlie?

What about weeds... i got to thinking about the ideas in matthew... so please forgive me if i am wrong kara... but it seems to me that the seeds sown by the evil one in matt. 13 have to do with telos... what is their intent... what will they be in maturity... on some level when we think about injustice, this makes me sad to know that no answer is provided here for why the "seeds" that produce fruit making plants vs. "seeds" that do not produce fruit are allowed to exist together... but in the end the sower will make the call when the harvest is ready and the "seeds" have or have not produced fruit for the master... so i guess i am sticking with the whole granola thing and thinking of sin as barren fields... something that cannot produce... etc.

I heard this particular film version was not so good. I'm more curious now to see it. Lauren and I listened to the unabridged audiobook of 'A Christmas Carol' on our drive back to Clovis, and loved it. It was definitely a "morality play (story) about greed, generosity to the poor and justice." The dialogues between Scrooge and the various ghosts after each major scene were startlingly powerful. Anyway, I now want to watch the film.

Rev. 16:16-17 (with a few adjustments in brackets)

And he gathered [firearms] together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon. And the seventh angel poured out his [clip] into the air; and there came a great [explosion] out of the [bazooka] of heaven, from the [firing range], saying, It is done.

I'm glad to hear that this version stuck to Dickens so well--you've made me interested to see it. I often forget that "God bless us, every one" is it's own calling to action that we also serve, and act, to bless every one, not just those who happen to sit at our Christmas table. Thanks for the reminder.
