American Christians & Torture

I just read this report on CNN.com which found that the more Americans attended church, the more likely we are to support torture.  What a terrible witness to this world we have become.  Rather than being an appetizer for the Kingdom of God we support the violence of this world more than it does itself!  I believe this is more evidence that as Christians we have become a people of “the means justify the ends” rather than a people willing to suffer as we follow the way of Christ.

What part of “your will be done, on earth, AS IT IS IN HEAVEN” do we not understand?

Thanks for this, sad but yet very true, point. I still can’t figure out the unhesitating support for things like torture by Christians. Its one thing to be “patriotic” and to even “support the military” but the extremes that so many go to is just ridiculous. Where are the Christians who do support the country but are willing to question and draw the line? I’d be really happy with a lot more of those folks.
It reminds me of the Sunday School class that Lauren and I were a part of for a couple of years at College Church in Olathe. One young man was constantly giving us updates of his brothers experiences in boot camp and how he just couldn’t wait to finally be shipped over to Iraq or Afghanistan. One Sunday morning, during a communal prayer, he was bold enough to pray that his brother would be able to “hurry up and kill somebody!” Wow. I spent the next few moments quietly trying to find my jaw which had dropped so hard that it had broken off, hit the floor and rolled as far away from that place as possible. I’m sure we all have stories like this.
Thanks again. I miss you brother.
