My best friend and cousin, Chad, recently asked me if I would baptize him while our family is together this Christmas season. Being asked to be a part of such an incredible chapter in his journey with Christ has been one of the greatest honors of my life. Chad and I are going through some spiritual practices together as we both prepare for this sacred moment. Perhaps my favorite of these has been to begin each day by saying the Apostle’s Creed. It has become my pledge of allegiance and starting each day by audibly declaring the one in whom I put my trust and belief has been something I hope to continue for the rest of my life.
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.
Amen.

What an awesome opportunity! God bless you both. I pray that one day I will have the honor of baptizing someone. It is a great step in one’s journey with Christ. I also think it’s great that your friend asked YOU to do it. Most times, we are to proud to ask our friends to do things like that because, well, they’re our friends. Chad seems very humble.
On the flip side, Chuck and Chad would be a good, NBC sitcom, where two guys live in an apartment together. One is more mature and stable, and one is cooler and lives life on the fast lane. I grant you production rights.
Oh, and be careful with such titles. Someone may accuse you of being anti-American or something. Just warning you. You might begin to sound Anabaptist, and people might come on your blog and accuse you of being anti-American, when that’s totally not the point. This happened to my friend (when I say “friend” you and I privately know I mean “me”).
The political overtones of the title were 100% intentional.
I don’t mind sounding Anabaptist, I welcome such “insults.”

Lol… I miss you charlie!

First of all, this blog looks cooler every time I visit.
Second, in agreement with Evan, how cool to do your friend’s baptism. I’ve done weddings for some family and friends and have participated in baptisms, (and even some funerals) and as you know, it’s really special.
Third, reciting the apostle’s creed as your pledge of allegiance is a brilliant practice.
Looking forward to reading more.
