I’m taking a break from researching for a term paper to rant about two of my favorite things: Hockey and Graphic Design. I’ve got hockey on the brain because as I’m sure everyone in America knows… the Stanley Cup Playoffs begin tonight. But how does graphic design come into the mix you ask?
The Buffalo Sabres, that’s how. They introduced a new logo this year, which is beyond comprehension in it’s complete encapsulation of all things lame. I came across this news via a graphic designer’s website dedicated to getting his logo put on the Sabres jerseys, and I’ve got to say he has done some great work.
Below are three logos. First the original Sabres logo, dated but still classic. Second the new “evil flying banana slug with horns” logo. Thirdly, John Slabyk’s modern interpretation of the classic logo. In a word – awesome. If you care about hockey and you care about web design you can even sign his petition to have the logo changed.

Actually….I like the original. I’m a little old school when it comes to hockey.
By the way….why Pavel Datsyuk on your page? I get that he can make phenomenal plays, but I often find that his tricky stick gets the Wings in some bad places. He forgets he’s got a team behind him sometimes. It drives me crazy! I’ve seen him single handedly lose a game.
Pavel Datsyuk is on my page because the playoffs are beginning and I think this is the year Datsyuk tears it up in the playoffs.
Old School for sure, here in Canada, we love the old unies…all the expansion brought was hockey fans that have no idea whats going on ie, fox puck tracker and ridiculous jerseys colors, logos and names…GO CANUCKS….woooohoooo….
The old one and the updated old one are forsure heads above the new one. I could care less about hockey, but that second logo is just wrong.
It is wrong. It’s SO WRONG I really really really have a hard time imagining in what science fiction universe the president or PR guy or whoever makes these choices saw the evil flying banana slug and said… “YES! THAT is what we’re looking for!”
I love the suggested update though, it’s classic and clean.
What about their, black, silver and red buffalo head logo?
Oh, I was just comparing these three. I think that the red and black one is way better than what they’ve currently got, but the proposed new one is even better.
I actually don’t mind the new unies, but I would say that the logo should be the classic on the new unies!
