Saturday Movie Post Returns

8 Comments 27 May 2006

It’s been a long time since I’ve made a Saturday Movie Post, but today was a good day to resurrect it.

Cool Hand Luke
Craig Keen has talked about this movie almost everytime I’ve been around him, so I had to check it out. I actually got together with Craig and some others from our Ethics class to watch this 1967 classic. This movie packs a profound Christological message and is full of Christ-imagery… although in the least expected places (and isn’t that always the case). Besides some of the allegory (which is flexible but seems intentional), it’s just a great movie. If you liked The Shawshank Redemption, you’ll love Cool Hand Luke.

X-Men III: The Last Stand
I thought X-Men was great, I thought X2 was one of the rare sequels that topped its first film. X-Men III: The Last Stand was good. I felt like they rushed the “last” chapter of the X-Men story and killed off too many characters for one movie. It just seemed a bit dissapointing for them to call it quits so soon and to do it in such a harried manner…

…then the credits roll…

…then there is a 3 second scene that changes my whole perception of this movie. From good to really good. From least favorite X-Men movie to close second to X2.

That three second scene does nothing for this movie…maybe for a fourth. But that scene alluding to an earlier moment in the moviedoes nothing for the hurried plot-line, the random killing of some characters, the using a BRIDGE to get an island (is it that hard to get a friggin boat?), the totally undeveloped story of “the cure” and its origins, and the totally anti-climatic ending to this “war” Magneto has proclaimed to have begun. Did it feel as if the future of the world was at stake when everything started to go down. It looked more like a game of mutant chess. And did they fill all this not-developling-a-plot screen time with more action? No, just four measly action scenes and a whole lot of conversations about other undeveloped subplots. The four scenes : 1)Magneto attacking the convoy (lots of car crashes are fun though), 2) Wolverine and Storm vs. those other two at Jean Grey’s house, 3) Wolverine versus some guy in the forest, and 4) the FINAL battle. The movie should’ve been called “Why Wolverine Can’t Get Over His Friend’s Dead Girlfriend and Random Little Boy Locked Up In A Room Playing Xbox 360.”

Oh, but Cool Hand Luke is wicked awesome!

    1. I don’t know “who”

    2. I agree that the movie is really rushed and seems to leave a lot of loose ends all over the place, but with the last scene there is a hope that in the next movie these plot lines will be picked up and finished. That gives me a new outlook on the film. The Bridge was ridiculous though.

man i am stoked the x-person movie is good, i was holding off seeing it.

i loved cool hand luke. i just watched it like a month ago for the second time since i was a youngin’

i give your reviews a thumbs up

  5. Kara says:

    Mike-
I appreciate your gender-inclusivity. I had somehow excluded mutants from deserving fair treatment between genders and had crassly called the movie by its repressive title. “X-Persons III” it is! :)

  6. David Tatum says:

Am i the only one that wanted to see more of nightcrawler? Dude he was my favorite growing up! What was up with Archangle anyway, his role was random and sketchy at best. I agree with the previous post about the obesesivness of wolverine, i mean hes cool and all but come on. The bridge scene was stupid considering alot of mutants can freakin fly, but whatever. Kara im sorry but “X-Persons III” just doesnt do it for me. I havent seen cool hand Luke so i have no comment. Charlie do you have a copy? Peace

  7. Kara says:

I have a copy of Cool Hand Luke. Just bought it. I was inspired.
Let me know if you’d like to borrow it.

  8. Charlie says:

However in hindsight, I really am still very disapointed about how rushed the plot felt in this movie. I think it suffered greatly from the “we’ll fake ‘em out about this being the last X-Men movie” ploy.
