What Are Your Favorite Scary Movies?
I love a good scary movie. There's just something about that adrenaline rush from the unexpected frightful moment, or better yet the slow build of tension that leaves you anxious and on edge the entire movie without relieving that tension with a big frightul moment.
Last year around Halloween I was on this scary movie kick and decided to do a little research on the "scariest movies ever." I was actually disapointed with a lot of the top 10, but hadn't seen the classics Friday the 13th and Poltergiest. So my cousin Chad and I went down to Blockbuster and rented these two flicks. On our way back to the appartment we decided to get some snacks. When the 7Eleven clerk rang up our order the total came out to $6.66! He said that it had happened only once before and the last time the customer was hit by a truck in the parking lot. OoooooOOooooOOoooo. Anyway, both of these movies were dissapointing as well. Some really good scary movies I've seen over the past few years have been The Ring, What Lies Beneath and 28 Days Later. Do any of you have suggestions of just all out scary movies?

Those are all good movies.
I would add:
- Alien
- Aliens (a bit more action-oriented, though)
- The Shining
- The new Amityville Horror with Ryan Reynolds freaked me out, although it feels a bit more evil than most, which leads me to:
- Event Horizon (I don't actually recommend this one, but it is probably one of the few movies I've ever watched that genuinely made me feel uneasy and like I was playing with something evil)
- Dawn of the Dead, the original George Romero (also a social commentary about consumerism!)
- Dawn of the Dead, the remake: a bit more shocking in parts, but still good.
- John Carpenter's The Thing: awesome, awesome, awesome!
Somewhat related to the "horror" genre, but generally more creepy and intelligent:
- Twin Peaks, the David Lynch-directed TV show masterpiece. It was sadly canceled after only two seasons.
- The Kingdom I + II - a three-part Dutch TV show that was never finished (hence only 2 parts) that is about a haunted hospital. Totally eery.
And not exactly real horror movies, but just as awesome in their own right:
- Evil Dead (well, an actual attempt at a horror movie)
- Evil Dead 2
- Army of Darkness
- Bubba Ho-Tep
- Bad Taste (Peter Jackson's first movie!)
- Dead Alive (the gorest movie I've ever seen, also directed by Peter Jackson!)
I remember the closterphobia Alien was great, being trapped on a space-ship makes for a tense movie. And yeah... Event Horizon was just flat out evil (nightmare enducing even!).
I've seen the latest Dawn of the Dead, thought it was a decent Zombie movie, but no where near as good as 28 Days Later, which was just a scary movie from start to finish, no cheesy mall guards to distract from the terror.
I'll have to check out The Thing.
and who could forget the Evil Deads, although they're much more scary/comedy than all out horror.
and Dead Alive? I'll check that out as well.
Anyone else have reccomendations?
So... turns out that the selection of good horror movies is scarce on Halloween at 11:30pm half an hour before your local Blockbuster closes. That's just a heads up to everyone else. If you want to rent some good scary movies, think Christmas Eve! I did end up picking up "The Haunting," which I know nothing about, so we'll see. And tucked away behind another movie I did come up with the Special Edition of The Shining so I have a classic to watch no matter how this other one turns out. The Thing and Dead Alive were both out at Blockbuster, so I'll get them on my online renting thang, thanks again for the reccomendations Eric.
Hey Charlie. Sorry I missed you Halloween horror movie kick, but here are some suggestions. Several of these are foreign (as you might expect from me) so go into them with an open mind that is alert enough to do some reading.
1) Rosemary's Baby (1968) - a classic Polanski (director of Chinatown) than I noticed was not mentioned.
2) Spoorloos (aka The Vanishing 1988) - This is more of a thriller with a horror twist.
3) Nosferatu - Two versions. One is a classic silent film. The other is a remake by Werner Herzog from the seventies (a great decade for horror).
4) Freaks (1932) - creepy little movie (it's only about an hour long) from the director of the classic Dracula with Bela Legosi.
5) Vargtimmen (aka Hour of the Wolf 1968) - Gothic, enigmatic, creepy and beautiful.
6) Suspiria (1977) - If you like this one check out others by Dario Argento, especially Deep Red or Inferno.
7) Ôdishon (aka Audition 1999) - If you like Japanees horror like the Ring...
Enjoy. By the way, thanks for the flyer again. The service rocked.
Peace.
THE SHINING scared me more than any other movie ever.
CARRIE, SIGNS, and ROSEMARY'S BABY are also pretty freaky.
Also, SAW, which i actually only saw the first 20 minutes of. The image of the guy riding out on the tricycle messed me up so bad i turned it off and refuse to look back.
